New parenthood is a wonderful time. It is exciting and scary. And it would be perfect if there were a roadmap and some guarantees that everything will end up exactly as you want it.
Of course, there are no guarantees. There are, however things you can do to help insure that the picture you have in your head of your child's happy life becomes a reality. One of these things is to create a support system around yourself and your new child.
Every culture has traditions to support new moms because they realize the importance of her well-being to the nurturing of the infant. In our culture there are few traditions like this and sometimes we have no one around to support us as new parents.
This is the role of the postpartum doula. She is part educator, part helper and part empathetic listener. A postpartum doula can help you bring about those dreams you have for your child by supporting you in your choices, informing you of tried and true baby care techniques and by helping you understand your baby.
